OS Upgrade Gone Wrong - Fedora 10 -> 12

So I started out started out Following the pre upgrade steps for Fedora 12 (the latest release), all looked good. Then .... the first problem ... not enough disk space in the boot partition, problem with the Fedora standard and the preupgrader install. Lots of tips and tricks later I am able to get it started. Downloads commence, stage one of install appears to work. From there it all went horribly wrong. The reboot took place but then didn't bring the screen up properly and the install wouldn't continue. Some parts had occurred so I had a part 10 part 12 build. Mail worked luckly, but not much else. I tried downloading an install CD and completing a network install from there. That appeared to be reasonably successful.

However what I found at the end of that process was that I could no longer start X windows on the system, tried a few things, no luck. I also noticed that all my core services, web, ftp, pop, postgres, were not successfully starting either. Caused by old config files and new program versions.

I had a choice... try and get X windows working, and manually try and reconfigure all the configuration files or ... just wipe another similar spec'ed Win XP machine and try a fresh install and migration.

I went with the later. I have now built a fresh Fedora 12 server migrated all the WoW data, restored the database, reconfigured all the servers, email order processing etc in about 48 hours.

Given it took about 2 weeks to do original set-up, I am very glad I documented all my steps last time, and glad I did the fresh install now.

Any way for all of you who were inconvenienced by the outage. My humble apologies. I don't plan to do another upgrade like this again anytime soon. Next time will probably be a fresh install and a planned migration with a coordinated very short cut over.

Back to the development ...
